A Real Maharishi Passes On

File under: Real True Gurus

The fact that we have never heard of the deceased 96-year-old Vethathiri Maharishi, who passed away yesterday, speaks mountains about his fitness as a guru. It turns out the Maharishi developed quite a nice little yoga center in Aliyar, India:
The centerpiece of the campus is the Temple of Consciousness, which is consecrated to raising the consciousness of individuals and the whole of humanity. Unlike other temples, there are no idols or formal rituals here. It is open to all. Group meditations and lectures for participants of various courses and for the general public are the major activities here.
We can't tell you much about the yoga the Maharishi taught beyond that he sought to impart "knowledge of true relationship between individual and the all pervading Almighty Unified Force." He must be talking about Brahman, just not in the terms of Adviata. Hey! We like him even more now.

We are extremely heartened by the fact that we've never, ever heard of this guy until today. What does that say about Sri Sri, the Babaster, Kracki and all the other big name players? We think it says a lot about their penchant for name and fame, at the expense of their teaching... rather than to enhance it. The fact of the Maharishi's relative anonymity is like a refreshing breeze amidst all the hot air being blown by these monster gurus' PR departments. They can never hope to emulate what the Maharishi has so beautifully accomplished; a significant contribution to the world of yoga, all without making it all about him.

We're truly sorry that we only came to know of the Maharishi the day after his mahasamadhi. He's made us realize that maybe we don't need a new kind of guru, just more gurus who are more like he was.

Jody decoded
Finally we understand Jody. What he really wants is that HE should never have heard of a jnani (until atleast the ole man kicks the bucket, May his [soul/Brahman] rest in peace)!

No matter that there is an ashram, there are courses, discourses, publications etc. Even a website.

But what matters is the "relative" anonymity. Jody shouldnt have heard of him, that's all :-)

So Jody when i become a jnani, how would i do all the above, and still not come to your notice? What are your sources, and how do i avoid them, pray enlighten me :-)

And, oh yes, how do i be of any use to humanity if i dont let anyone know.

Jody: We're truly sorry that we only came to know of the Maharishi the day after his mahasamadhi.

Jo, if you knew of him earlier, you would have been barbequeing his behind on your blog, are you sorry you missed that oppor. ?

Jody:He's made us realize that maybe we don't need a new kind of guru, just more gurus who are more like he was.

Yeah, more anonymous gurus we either never hear of, or we read of them on Jody's site, when they've popped their cork.

Jody: We are extremely heartened by the fact that we've never, ever heard of this guy until today.
Wish i could say that of you!

How did Jody forget to add himself in that list! At the top!

Do you know something about him that I don't?

How did Jody forget to add himself in that list! At the top!

Is this sour grapes because I'm making fun of Sri Nit?

To tell you the truth, I had some trepidations giving the Maharishi a positive spin without actually knowing the background. But the fact that a guru is unknown in the West is a strong indication that he's not about name and fame.

By contrast, we can examine Sri Nit. He comes over here as a self-declared paramahamsa, putting on an act that's one part Ammachi and one part Vivekananda, with a bit of Yogananada thrown in for good measure. He's getting his brain waves measured and then crowing about it. Next up, a PR department of his very own.

I'm not saying Sri Nit isn't authentic or that's he's a bad guru. By all accounts so far he seems like a good guy and a good guru, despite all the pomp and circumstances of his web presence.

Go to the Maharishi's site and see how big the picture of him is. Now compare that to the pictures on Sri Nit's site. I think that says it all.

I'm sorry it's your guru that's getting skewered, Ananda. You seem like a nice guy and I'm sorry you are taking it personally. It's the matter of his presentation that I object to. I'm just a fool with opinions, Ananda. Such should be of no concern to an authentic paramahamsa, and by extension, his devotees as well.

why do they have to mention this? I don't get it...

It's standard operating procedure. Ammachi, Chinmoy and Sri Sri have also addressed the U.N.

Nonetheless, the fact that the Maharishi cut such a low profile puts him in a different class than those guys.

Hey, Jody, (a) This has nothing to do with anyone else - i thought it was quite clear that i was just having fun, pulling your leg!
(b) Perhaps i should make it clear that i do not represent any guru. I just happened to have met Nithya recently and I shared my experience. I am very new to this whole spiritual thing and cannot comment on you or others, or defend anyone - I can only share my 2 cents.

Jody:I'm sorry you are taking it personally.
To be honest, i have been a strong follower of Ramana Maharshi for the short while (one year) I have been in this search. If I did not respond to your recent blog on Him (Hitler), then forget my taking anything else personally.

Jody: Such should be of no concern to an authentic paramahamsa, and by extension, his devotees as well.
Please don't judge him by the responses of this drifter.

Heh. You had me fooled me good, Ananda!

Please don't judge him by the responses of this drifter.

It's the responses of his devotees that have redeemed him somewhat to my mind, despite the seeming crass commerciality of his web presence.

Vazhga Vaiyagam Vazhga valamudan

Any Enlightened Guru will appear or disappear in front of the society based on the needs of once Thoughts, Words, Actions.

I agree so many enlightened persons are roaming or living in and around Himalayas or where no common peoples are living. Such type of Masters are sending their Spiritual cum social messages to the world by the way of Telepathy communication and needs more mind maturity to grasp the same. For common people its not possible. You have to agree almost more than 99.9% peoples in the world are very common , irrespective of their status. ie., almost all the peoples mind are in immatured state only.( If you want u can confirm the same with any Psycologists)

Such immatured peoples always communicate with each other by the way of Actions and words only and they dont know how to communicate through Thoughts (ie., Telepathy method)

Since the society has lot of immatured peoples where they dont know how to live in a Moral way? That’s why so many Wars, terrorism and etc., Now a day peoples are more talking about "Piece" rather than talking about "Peace". It such cases who will really guide the peoples in a proper way or in a Moral way?

You have to appreciate the Love and compassion of the Enlightened persons like Guru Vethathiri Maharishi's where they are appearing in front of the society and communicating the Spiritual messages by the way of Lectures(ie., Speech or otherwise you can take it as words). It is not necessary for any enlightened persons like Guru Vethathiri Maharishi to come infront of the society for any such type of Breaching. Then why they are coming and appearing in front of the society? Its only for us, its for our own benefits , its for the benefit of the society, its for our future Generations benefits. Whenever in the society Peace goes off, such type of Enlightened persons are coming and Guiding all the peoples in a Moral way.

One more think to Pass any message in the world atleast some sort of Organisation setup is needed which needs money. He did not begged anybody. Its a give and take policy for the welfare of society only.

Do you know while leaving the world, he left all the things and given everything to the welfare of humanity and all the properties were properly documented .

So dont Judge or comment any Enlightened persons with your inadequate or poor knowledge. Better to know more about him read his philosophy and always try to keep silence.

Always better before commenting any such Great Spiritual Guru in a bad manner, better you go in deep knowing about them and his message to the society, Philosophy, and etc., Otherwise it may become a Violent curse for you and your Generations.... where nobody can help you in get rid of it, even God also. (Its anicient Vedas Statement only)

Yours Sincerely,
S.Anandanatarajan,
-A Citizen of the Universe from the Tiny Planet Earth
