The Love Guru To Put Hindus' Panties Into Wad

File under: The Siddhi of PR

Austin Powers movie series actor Mike Myers has a summer release called The Love Guru coming soon to a theater near you, unless your town is full of fundie Hindus:
The Universal Society of Hinduism has expressed fear that the upcoming Hollywood movie The Love Guru may lampoon the religion and has demanded that it be shown to the society members for vetting before release.

President of the society Rajan Zed, who is based in Reno, Nevada, said in a statement issued in Chandigarh that from the information available about the movie, it appears to be lampooning Hinduism and Hindus and uses Hindu terms frivolously.
You just know those USH folks have the sense of humor of a road-kill skunk, so get ready for some fundie freaking-out along with your silly spoofy summer entertainments, with that freaking-out likely to only increase interest and attendance in the film. It might turn out that the USH protest may be the best thing to happen to The Love Guru, promotion-wise.

Recall that when Xena: Warrior Princess had a story-line in which she encountered Krishna, certain Hindu watchdog orgs were up in arms. How dare anyone suggest that Krishna might be a fictional character!

Ah, well, this is our world. People mature cognitively at different rates, and religious fanaticism is something that some of us pass through. There are plenty of examples of people growing beyond it, it just takes time.

We here in the US are fortunate to live in a place/time where the fundies don't have so much power. Yeah, I know that for political demegogery, US Christian bigots are sometimes painted as having huge influence on our culture, but comparitively, they're a tiny fringe. The vast, concensus majority of us believe in live and let live.

The Beatles movie Help was about a very thinly disguised Kali-Kult, Kaieeli the Black mother,or something like that, so i'm sure mike took his inspiration in big part from that. He's a huge Beatles Fan
The funny thing is that Indian Grocery stores are full of Krishna curry powder and Durga detergent, but no one is having a fit about that.
Still you could compare it to Zap comic book depictions of Mickey Mouse, seeing your child hood pal doing the nasty not exactly reassuring. After all look how Meyers played the Fat Bastard Character! Very Gross, i don't want no one doin that to my deity!
Indians don't like westerners co-opting their deities
, they don't think westerners get it. They don't see the humor in it. I guess they don't see why Krishna curry is funny, no awareness of how they themselves borrow from the semiology, for popular purposes. Of course their above all that!

Go to:

and you can view the episode with Mike Myers and Deepak Chopra. Myers has had an interest in Indian philosophy for quite some time. That's where his inspiration came from.

When Hindus haven't haven't hacked up people and burned mosques and killed brides for lack of dowry and haven't let millions and millions of their own people sleep on the roadways for a decade or so, I might be concerned with their feelings about their gods being portrayed incorrectly in a silly movie. When the Jews haven't bombed and killed children for the same length of time I might care again about their holocaust. When Christians get off their fat asses and actually do anything about their suffering neighbors, I might be concerned about how Christ is portrayed. Moslem's? Forget about it!

They sure have strange (to us) laws in India, probably promoted by the fundamentalist Hindus, whereby it's a crime (not merely a civil case) to ridicule a religion!

BTW, I live in Reno. The name in the article rings a bell. The Hindu Society is somewhat active here.

That's because they have a lot of Moslems there who think it's a good thing to kill people who criticize their religion. As Islam grows bigger in the US, there will likely be more violence associated with religion here.
