Deepockets Off The Deep End

File under: Gurubusting and The Siddhi of PR

Deepak Chopra, hot off his cameo in the recent flop, The Love Guru, lets us into his wacky world in an extensive interview in Newsweek:
In a shopping mall in London, Chopra is explaining the connection between a journalist and his coffee cup. ""This is you,'' he says, pointing to the cup. ""You think it's a cup, but it isn't.'' Dressed in workout clothes, with no cell phone or watch, Chopra seems admirably at ease in the mall, so much so that he doesn't even check his placement at the bookstore. ""It's the conscious energy field that is manifesting as the cup and yourself. The same field.'' On the five-day ""silent'' retreats he takes every three months, sometimes with his wife, Rita, Chopra says he can actually see this field.
Another day, another guru feeding us absolute nonsense about nondual truth. Not that there isn't a shared source of being between a person and a cup, just that it's never been something anyone would be able to see, outside the projection of their own imaginings about it.

But that is the New Age™ way, and Deepockets is the most Indian New Age™ guru, so it makes perfect sense he'd spew a gaffe like this in Newsweek, despite our disappointment at finding out just how full of it he really is.

That H20 takes on the properties of a solid, a liquid and a gas doesn't mean that ice doesn't exist, or that they're all the same. And that most of our body is composed of H20 doesn't mean that we are almost identical to each other.

I'm not sure it's helpful to be an absolutist and say "They're all H20," if I needed to skate, quench my thirst, or get wrinkles out of clothes.

Well, thanks for the blog. I have almost stopped wondering what makes these gurus tick. Its simply what makes every politician tick - a little bit of luck, little bit of incumbency, a little bit of charisma (okay maybe a lot) and lot of lazy ignorance from others.

Here is a blog entry dissecting Jaggi Vasudev (I am hard pressed to find any of his detractors - I am interested because I have some near and dear ones caught relentlessly in his web). http://harmanjit.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Sample Jaggi Vasudev BS:
Stagnation is a certain disease. It is anti-life. Stillness is a tremendous amount of life not manifesting itself in any way. It is just there – potent. That is God. God is stillness, not stagnation. The mind is stagnation.

>>> : Stillness(Consciousnes) is the creator and the movement(world)is the creation. If god is all pervasive, then it is both stillness and movement together. If there is stagnation even that included. Mind is movement(world),dynamic and may not stagnate by default, except incase of the ego droppers. Why divide god and give a separate status?

Sounds like you have never experienced seeing "lights". How do you know another person can´t see something which is not yet explained scientifically?

Disbelief may close down the receptor-channels in your body, so you will most probably only experience it when you "open up", and even when seeing, many people will just forget/dismiss it very quickly.

It is an experience. It has nothing to do with dualism/non-dualism. It may have everything to do with physics (remains to be seen). Why are you grinding the axe about dualism?

Problem is, if people do not research it, it will never be found. So it is an interesting take that people like Deepak Chopra is doing, although it has nothing to do with dualism or realization (but why should it have to?).
